The GDP can be measured in three different ways, GDP(E), GDP(I) and GDP(P).
 
GDP(E) is the expenditure approach used to calculate the nations income. It consists of four components, consumption, investment,goverment purchases and net exports. Consumption is the spending by households on goods and services. Investment is spending on equipment, inventories and so on. Goverment purchases is spending on goods and services by all the goverments, such as millitairy goods. Net exports is spending of exports minus imports. Basically this calculates all of our spending.

 GDP(I) is the income approach.  It is the sum of factor incomes, depreciation and net indirect taxes. Factor incomes includes wages and salaries paid to labour and the profit received by the business. Depreciation is the wear and tear of investments, items rusting and so on.  The net indirect taxes are taxes that is paid on the items we buy.

GDP(P) is the production approach.  This measurement calculates how much it costs to produce an item by taking the firms ouput minus the input.

These three measurements tells us how the economy is doing, if the GDP is growing, the production will grow, if the production grows the income will too, and with a larger income the spending will grow aswell. The same thing happens when the economy is falling.
