Hot keys..what to do, what not to do?

So how do you setup your hotkeys for controlling units and buildings in sc2?

At the moment, I ALWAYS do this:

1 - Command Centers
2 - Barracks
3 - Factories
4 - Starports

Main Army..nowhere!

My super new trainer recommends the following for me:

1 - Main Army
2 - Vikings (if I have them)
3 - Special Units (ghosts, Ravens, etc)
w - Command Centers (the Zero key should be bound to the W key)
4 - Barracks
5 - Factories
6 - Starports

I am not sure how easy it will be to transition to this new setup, but I am willing to give it a go.

What do you all do?

1 - Main army
2 - Support units(infestors mostly)
3 - harass/high tech units(Mutas, runby groups with lings, late game corruptors/broods)
4 - Hatches
5 - main hatch
6 - natural
7 - third

1 - Main army (When i mass queen, i take queens here, too)
2 - Infestors
3 - Air units (or early game scouts)
4 - All hatches
5 - All queens
6 - Swarm host
7, 8, 9, 0 - upgrades + tech buildings

I use the black widow keyboard, which means that I have 5 macro-keys at the left of my keyboard, which i use for 6, 7, 8, 9 and 0, very practical. This is not cheating since it's one key = one action.

I've also tried to rebind all the hotkeys from the right of h, t and b, (I changed the infestation pit from I to F, and ultralisk cavern from U to E, metabolic boost and melee upgrade from M to E etc...)

0 - all units, repositioned to |

2 - Selected units (anti drop, stalkers, HTS, warp prisms etc)
3 - Special units (spell casters, high dps)
4 - Tech or warp in pylon
5 - Robo / Stargate
6 - Rebound as F1 - all nexi
7 - Rebound as F2 - main nexi
8 - Rebound as F3 - natural
9 - Rebound as F4 - 3rd
0 - Rebound as | (left for 1) - for observers, warp prism

Tidenes mest fucka hotkeys.

Interesting to see that many of you will bind custom keys.

I like the binding of the F keys to numbers..I might try that (once I figure out how to bind keys!)

The F1-F4 was just an old habit from WC3 that I wanted to use, instead of trying to grow longer fingers. Works for me tho, but might be more efficient to use camera hotkeys for most of you.

Try to make custom keys out of |, Q and Caps Lock.

Personally I think your coach might have given you a great setup for Terran. I use 4 CC, then Raxes on 5 and so on..but his setup is better for the average hand size I think.

no clue why people keep posting Zerg setups as it is pretty clear you are a terran player. You keep saying you cant get out of gold, looking at your current hotkey-stup its pretty clear that without hotkeying main army you will struggle a lot more.

Listen to your trainer, that is a good setup. And yes, it will take a day or three to get used to, but trust me you will benefit from it. Also you should use grid if you are not doing it already.

Oh god...now I am going to sound dumb..

What is Grid? Is this the building placement thing? Or something else entirely??

PS, I dont mind that people post their zerg hotkey setups. I think that there is plenty or room in the forum for zerg players too, even if they should all be stepped on like a bug in the alley... ;)

I'll just copy paste from another forum:

Basically, it makes it so all units in a building, unit commands, etc. are assigned hotkeys based on their position in the UI. For example, since a Marine is the Top-Left in the Barracks, its hotkey would be Q. Here's a page I found that has a small picture to illustrate:http://faqs.ign.com/articles/110/1109259p1.html

How to turn on:
Menu -> Options -> Hotkeys -> Select the "Grid" option from the dropdown


Gird is mostly a preference thingy, but it makes it a lot easier to remember hotkeys (as you only have to remember the placement in the grid)

How to bind keys? I really like the idea of not having to put my fingers all the way to 6-7-8 etc..

1: Nexuses
2: Gateways (yes, I know they are also on "W")
3: Robo, Stargate
4: Main Army
5: Secondary army (Group to deal with drops / High templars 1 / Warp prism 1 / harass group)
6: Third army (Warp Prism 2 / High Templars 2)
7: Main Observer
8-9: Other observers
0: Forges / Cybernetics Cores (If going air upgrades)

I also use F2-F5 for location hotkeys at my bases

Dunno if this is the best setup really, but i think its a matter of preference.
I've been stuck with this forever, and its so hard to change them
